[Application] Chiba, Kane

// Let me know if I did this wrong //

All Chiba Kane had ever wanted was a stable life, or so she says. Unfortunately for her, she grew up in the 71st district of the northern Rukongai where such a thing was a luxury none could afford. Kane was not unlike her fellows in the 71st for the first century of her life: she lived fearfully and with an overabundance of caution in order to get by. It isn’t clear when or why she changed, but when she did, she made a decision that would change the course of her district and its people: Kane was going to take control of her life.

For at least the next century or more, Kane led a gang within the 71st whose influence extended to the 70th and 72nd northern districts as well. Decades of inter-district bloodshed at the hands of Kane’s group and her own blade acted as the foundation for their control of the area. Over the next fifty or so years, Kane had begun to leave her home less and less instead of being as directly involved as she’d once been. For as ruthless as she was, she was even more paranoid.

Ironically, Kane’s own distrust of the outside world had set her up for a coup a few years after the troubles began in the Gotei. Drawn out of her abode with news of trouble that only she and her blade could solve, Kane found herself betrayed by her own subordinates and surrounded by Shinigami. She had a choice: either join the Seireitei or be left to fight off the combined forces of her traitorous gang and two other rival groups she'd fought with for years. Bitterly, she chose the former… but she wouldn’t forget this.

Her time in the Academy was uneventful as Kane tried to just keep her head down and assess her new situation and remain vigilant. Upon graduation, her placement was torn between the 11th Division for her swordsmanship skills and the 8th for her observant nature. Eventually, she settled on the 8th.

Life is shit, go full warlord in Outer Rukongai as many do, be paranoid and hide way which sows mistrust, get betrayed and sold out to the Shinigami. Shit's fucked on Earth, your sentence is to enlist, and she gets herself stuffed away into 8th to forget about it all.

Excellent, it follows.

Here's my question: How much does she need to be prompted by the events of the story to get involved with the other characters? In a way, it seems you've already written her conclusion, in that she's found her new home to hide in. If she's not just hiding away like before, playing with butterflies, what's she doing now?

If Kane learned anything from her experiences, it's that hiding away was her ultimate downfall. She needed to remain proactive and involved in order to keep her stable life. SO now she wants to start again; gather information, train/learn as much as she can, climb the ranks, and TRY to form more trustworthy bonds. The last point will be the hardest after being betrayed by her longtime clan.

(also unsure what the proper word would be for the time period. gang? clan?)

I'm not sure we should even try to venture a guess as to what the proper term would be, so I'd just go with gang since it seems the most general. There'll be anachronisms like that all over -- such is fiction. Especially weeby fanfiction.

It's definitely clear that she's not just going to repeat the same mistakes. So, I think, what I, as a player, am most interested in next is are other potential hooks. Right now, all I kind of vaguely see is someone who could be taken advantage of by an unscrupulous actor -- but she might be too experienced and jaded for that, at this point.

Some I have for Yuu include that he has the potential to be feel threatened by those of similar station to him, particularly the Nobility, and that could likely come out during stressful situations where people's usual filters aren't so strong. In addition, he enjoys taking new Shinigami under his literal and proverbial wing.

These aren't necessarily excellent, or even good, but they give opportunities to others. Takahiro took advantage of this, fat lot of good it did the poor Sixth Seat, and created a connection where he was mentored by Yuu early on in his Shinigami career. Having those things present here in this thread allows others to find you and have ideas of their own like that.

some stuff that comes to mind when i think of kane, ALSO open to any suggestions

- Kane deeply desires a close knit "family" unit she can trust and protect.
- Weakness for parent-like mentors.
- Respects hardworking nobles as she sees them as just successful and socially accepted gang leaders. Lazy nobles are scum.
- Kane's paranoia causes her to make assumptions about people and read into things that mean nothing.

That's great. See, I can easily play off that now, in more detail.

2. Yuu loves taking Shinigami under his wing. He's outgoing, friendly, and decent at his job. Depending on how far back this was, he was still an upper (10th to 6th) Officer. Good to take advantage of his generosity and tutelage, if nothing else.
4. But it's also quite possible that she can tell he's not doing this entirely out of the goodness of his heart, even if his ulterior motives aren't bad per se, they do exist

Not that you necessarily have to run with that, but simply a few lines from you has really fleshed out something I could at least offer for your character. If you ran with it, it becomes easy to start imagining what relationship they now have at the start, if any, and that snowballs from there.

I can't help but wonder how her desire to create this family unit might clash with the nature of the setting calling for a lot of red-shirt Shinigami that are probably pretty obviously just there to fill slots and about to be sent out to die. Particularly, some of the characters we have already being pretty low-ranked footsoldiers. It almost feels like she'd either be caught between her own paranoia and distrust getting in the way of her forming meaningful relationships or forming those relationships only to have to bear the weight that comes from knowing that everyone is always at risk of death in times like these. The idea of these lower ranking Shinigami wanting to look out for one another is pretty compelling if some of them are wizened up to their effective place in this organisation.

Oh it absolutely does! She desires a family unit in a setting that can be described as a person meat grinder. She desires normal, deep, reliable connections (like anyone) but is at odds with that anxious, already wounded voice in the back of her head telling her to be careful. Kane is very much at odds with herself.

Kazuki can be Kane's Lil' bro. Supplying her with his carefully designed cigarette and listening to her troubles.

Tragic character who desires family - love it! I have noticed something: does Kane have any sort of resentment towards Shinigami?

Age:
378
Birthday: November 9
Gender: Woman
Ethnicity: Ancient Icelandic [Norwegian]

Physical Specifications
Height & Weight:
186 cm & 65 kg
Eyes: Grey
Hair: Pale Blonde

General Appearance:
There's a dullness to Kane; as if her creator forgot to add vibrance to her palette before letting her loose. Her battle-scarred skin is on the fair side but lacking in the bright flush of life. Her hair is a pale blonde that hangs carelessly and with no thought for style. Her steely grey eyes–cradled by a fine line or two–stare out at the world in a generally placid manner, save for if something or someone piques her interest. Then, a sparkle of mirth and mischief brings her face to life.

Kane carries herself through the Gotei on careful, quiet steps that allow her to sneak up on people (which she finds very funny) but do little to hide her from onlookers. Standing at 186 centimeters, Kane is an imposing figure to behold. Her frame is muscular but hidden by her overly modest attire. Besides wearing her standard Shinigami uniform, Kane likes to pair it with a high-collared, black cloak over top that ends just above her hands and possesses four slits, front and back, for ease of movement. The collar, meanwhile, sits right below her chin: allowing her to hide amused smirks when staring down at short people.

Psychological Profile
Kane moves through the Gotei like someone who has cheekily snuck in somewhere they aren't supposed to be. She watches the Shinigami flit about like a cat watches a line of busy ants, wondering what would happen if she messed with them. Often she forgets she is a part of the line and is, herself, an ant. It's difficult for Kane time seeing herself "a part" of the Gotei 13 due to the circumstances surrounding her "recruitment" and she has to remind herself that the Shinigami aren't "other" anymore: she is one.

Positive Traits
Adaptable - Surviving the poor districts of the Rukongai required Kane to be ready for some new disaster every day. As a warlord, she had to be able to deal with it. In the Gotei, she continues to live as if her world–or at least her day– will be turned upside down at a moment's notice. Go here! No there! Nevermind, you're dismissed. It's all good, she'll be the water to the Gotei's cup until she doesn't have to be.

Eager & Curious - While Kane never wanted to join the Academy, her sour attitude was rocked when the Shinigami handed her their brand new invention: the Asauchi. They were willing to just give her this extraordinary weapon? AND teach her magic and new sword arts? Is it wrong to eagerly learn from your kidnappers? What else did they have around here?

Convivial - Even bandits like to have fun. Loud nights of drinking, humourous conversations with comrades, and good-natured hassling are all a part of interacting with Kane. It's all good, light-hearted fun. If she doesn't have a problem with someone, she sees no reason to not have a good time with them.

Bold - WIP

Negative Traits
Skeptical & Bitter - The Dogs of Inuzuri were Kane's family, to an extent, especially the high-ranking members and her lieutenant. Nevertheless, she lost everything via betrayal orchestrated by those she'd been closest to for over a century. With barely a moment to process it all, Kane was whisked away into the Academy. She's a Shinigami now... or something. It's all a little hard for her to believe right now and she is still bitter.

Paranoid - If her family was willing to stab her in the back, how can she trust anyone again? Kane thought she had genuine camaraderie in the Rukongai, but evidently she either misjudged the people she knew or friendship can change with opportunity. Could she make some new, genuine connections in the Gotei? Maybe. However, could those people back stab her in eighty years for some reason? Absolutely! For now, Kane is keeping her walls up and facade on.

Brutal - During her Rukongai days, Kane sought to pull herself up from her circumstances through violence. She protected the districts she controlled, but not for nothing. Refuse to pay tribute? Brush off a direct order? Then be made an example of. Kane's tactics were brutal but they worked and that was enough for her. Survival and war require savagery, even more so when you're fighting Hollow.

Needling - When Kane doesn't like someone, her playful jeering and jokes become pointed and purposeful. She's the kind of person who likes to see how far she can push someone she doesn't like or respect before they snap in a delightfully dramatic fashion. It's all careful, calculated, and cruel but can backfire if she's too obvious.

Documented History
Prologue

In life, she was an Icelandic woman who had set sail with her family for greener pastures– literally, if the name was to be believed. However, they arrived to a harsh land completely unlike the title it was given. It had been a trick to lure in colonists by Erek the Red and she had to watch her family wither and die because of it. Eventually, Greenland took her life as well.

Relevant Background
The Afterlife [985 - 1135 CE]
In death, she still yearned for a stable life. Unfortunately, she awoke in the 78th district of the southern Rukongai, also known as Inuzuri. It was a place infested with bandits and poverty and it offered her no chance at better life than "Greenland" had. Kane lived fearfully for the first one hundred and fifty years of her life. She kept her head down, did menial labour, and paid her tributes to whichever bandit clan was dominant at the time. It isn’t clear when or why she changed, but when she did, she made a decision that would change the course of her district and its people: Kane was going to take control of her life.

The Dogs of Inuzuri[1135 - 1343 CE]
For the next two hundred years, Kane was the warlord of the bandit clan within the 78th whose influence extended to the 77th and 79th southern districts as well. Decades of inter-district bloodshed at the hands of Kane’s group and her own blade acted as the foundation for their control of the area. At their peak, they had secured five fringe districts. Times were good and they enjoyed the tributes paid to them by the locals.

The Crisis [1343 - 1357 CE]
Things changed when the troubles on earth began. Hollows had always attacked the Rukongai, especially the outer districts, but not like this. Kane’s clan no longer worried about their rivals as everyone was more concerned with fending off Hollows every single day. The bandits of Inuzuri pulled back to two districts, but were otherwise holding their own. Nevertheless, treachery began to fester. For as ruthless as Kane was, she was growing paranoid. She had heard of how vicious the Shinigami recruiters had become in their desperation and so she became reclusive, knowing she had the hunger the spiritually-capable possessed.

Ironically, Kane’s paranoid actions had set her up for a coup a few years after the troubles began. Some of her closest companions, her highest officers, conspired to draw her out of hiding and Kane found herself alone and surrounded by Shinigami. She had a choice: either join the Seireitei or die. Bitterly, she chose the former… but she wouldn’t forget this.

Her time in the Academy was uneventful as Kane tried to just keep her head down and assess her new situation. She was placed firmly in the 11th upon graduation, a decision she agreed with.
