The sun had yet to fully rise, as Mako quietly sat on the roof of a building at the edge of the Rukongai. He was far from town .. he didn't want to attract any attention, after all. Sitting quietly on his perch, surrounded by the darkness that was slowly being cast away by the light of the sun- only the soft, distant sounds of crickets chirping filling the air, still too early for even the birds to become active. He was afraid .. but he was always afraid, Yuta would probably be angry that he was out alone again- but that was fine .. he was allowed to do what he wanted, and he wouldn't understand anyway. There was no way he could explain it either .. he didn't want to be in that house, he didn't want to be around people, he just wanted one single thing. Quiet. It was quiet .. and that, in a way, was nice. Peaceful, hidden away from the darkness and despair that surrounded his home .. Reiko and Yuuta weren't up at this hour, and neither were many other individuals.
Still, he knew a few were early risers (or late coming home from drinking), and for this reason, he'd chosen the edge of the slums. Listening to the soft chirps of crickets transform to the sounds of squirrels and birds, soft chirps and ruffling of leaves following through with soft rays of light chasing away the darkness. He didn't really like anything. Liking anything left you open to being wounded, to being hurt, it wasn't worth the trouble- not at all. He had enough scar's, enough fear, without caring for things, or people. But .. the way the light chased away the darkness, this one point in time every day, brought him a sort of peace. He wasn't sure how, it was meaningless really, just the natural events of the world. But .. it was almost as if his heart lightened just a bit, seeing it- one more reason to keep surviving. The promise he'd made to Reiko- it was so troublesome.
He supposed he could humor her. "One reason a day to live." It was troublesome but .. it wasn't so hard, ever since he'd found this moment it had been something. Mako couldn't dare call it "hope", such a thing was only a thing that the ignorant, idiotic, or unrealistic believed in. But if it worked, if it helped him hold his promise to Reiko, then that was enough. With a sigh, he watched the darkness chased away entirely, and glanced at the shadows that remained. It was a painful reality- no matter how bright the light may shine, darkness never completely disappeared- and that was why hope was idiotic. Closing his eyes, he ruffled his matted, dirty locks of black hair and slowly hauled himself upward so he was standing on the roof, allowing his gaze to trail over his surroundings a final time before he turned and began to carefully climb down from the roofing.
Weak hands, covered in scar's and wounds grasped the wooden beams as he lowered himself- until small feet touched the grass beneath him. On instinct, he shifted back and away from the light- now that his moment was gone, he knew the light wouldn't help him any further today. Now he was on his own, and that meant hiding int he shadows and being as unnoticeable as possible. Quietly, he followed the line of the buildings shadows- letting his gaze trail over the buildings that were slowly opening, windows expanding outward, doors sliding open, life beginning to return to this disgusting, dark, terrible place. He would frown, but he knew better. Never show emotion, never show reaction, never show anything but lack of emotion. If you didn't give anyone anything, they'd ignore you, or at worst, they'd get bored of you quickly.
With this line of thought Mako would begin forward, sticking to the darkness as much as possible .. he should try to find something to eat, but it had to be small so that his body digested it before he had to return home. Or he'd just puke it up when his father ..
He ignored such thoughts. Instead, he just focused on the goal: find something small to eat, and a quiet place is hidden away from everyone else to eat it and hide for the rest of the day until he had to return to that dark place. His hand trailed up to his shoulder, holding the fresh injury that decorated his skin underneath his ragged clothing. Shaking his head, he continued walking forward, eyes moving slowly from one person to the next as he searched for the best place to get food. Begging was out of the question- you just got beat for that here. Theft, or luck, was the only real options for finding food when it came to him.
