1) This is a rubric I created. It was tweaked with the help of some other staff and has had 2 major iterations. I was working on a 3rd but it isn't going well, so I had effectively "retired" this. Do understand that everything I am presenting here is essentially from my own head, and so I am writing it from a position of authority. Don't take my language to mean I consider myself above correction, I just mean to imply that I do not write with self-doubt. By all means, contribute to this living document. Please!
2) I am going to highlight what each part means to me, what I look for, what I care about, and what goes into my vote as a grader. I'll try to offer what "passing" means, and that is what I want to define as our chief goal.
3) This rubric has a scoring system but it is not perfectly rigid. Even though I recommend a score for passing, if you have to let the number decide for you then that's not a good thing. This rubric is intended to frame your thoughts and provide feedback, not decide for you.
This grading rubric operates on a scale of 1-10 where 1 would be the absolute bottom of the barrel of any work. 10 would be perfection beyond correction. In general, a rating of 6 represents "the standard" we would accept. Therefore, a 6 should be considered 'good enough' for an individual category. Look for a reason to adjust above or below this number.
Is this of the quality we expect from a Second Release player?
Description of opinion on quality of writing, emotional impact, basic grammar, and cleanliness of conventions.
//Our barrier for acceptable writing in a Second Power player is fairly low. It's basically a bar of "Is this painful to read?" We need to see things mostly spelled right, although a couple typos per paragraph will not ruin anything. More importantly, the magnitude of the errors needs to be below a certain threshold. Is this player's message ruined by their wrong word choices or terrible syntax?
A 6 / 10 here represents someone who present legible prose that you can read in one sitting. Word choices are mostly appropriate, and the typos, while present, are normally not crippling.//
Is the release something we would expect? Do we see a theme here in keeping with the First power?
Description on opinion of the thematic quality of the release. Does it work well to promote roleplay? Does it keep with the theme of their skills? Remember: This is not a comment on the actual mechanics, merely the substance that will lead to them.
//With the exception of Arrancar who are going for Res, we should see all players expanding on the themes of their first power and creating a true translation of their real strength. There is certainly leeway for distance in execution, but conceptually we must be able to see a relationship. A player who has an Ice power may be able to convince us their Second power should be Fire. Or a player who has a Water Shikai could easily sell us on their Bankai creating water for their use.
A 6 / 10 here represents a believable and appropriate extension. Extra points here go to powers that have a greater effect on the outside world or extremely unique applications that can enrich our setting. Points can be lost here for exceedingly pedestrian powers that do not fit the more grand stage provided. This is subject to a degree of personal taste, but the basis of an obvious tie resulting in a normal score keeps it grounded.//
We expect the moment of achievement to be one of greatness with power and content to back it up.
Description of opinion on the moment of achievement and supporting events. Keep in mind that players may write their request leaving success or failure uncertain ; try not to hold "uncertainty" against them in regards to their resolution.
//Second Power is a crystallization of your character. It represents, in essence, you embracing what it is your experience has been trying to tell you that you are. You've successfully transitioned from a background person into a PC already, and you've built out your relationships in order to force your first, true test of your identity.
This test is brought about by a call to action: a genuine need. One does not simply think about it and cry and then develop a Second Power - your mettle must be tested by something that threatens what you think you know in order for you to solidify. Then within yourself you find the strength of purpose to overcome. Diamonds are not made simply by inner turmoil, they require heat and pressure.
The easier example to reference is Ichigo's need to save Rukia. He had to look deep within himself to find the resolve to do whatever it took to meet that need. While no one here needs to copy Ichigo (nor should they) the message is clear - The road to that spike in growth is best catalyzed by a need.
Do I see that? Is the need the character must meet appropriate and genuine for their development? Or is their discovery pulled out of their hind end without regard?
A 6 / 10 is someone who shows me a need that feels real for their character, and then confronts their problem in a manner I find fits the character. Rational reactions, or explainable irrational ones are both acceptable. I want to see resolve.//
X/30 = QQ% - Second release generally suggests 18 out of 30 (60%) or better, but this is merely a tool to evaluate, not the be-all
Pass or Failure
