This is not necessarily an in-depth guide, because it doesn't have to be. We have tons of guides in our own rules as to what makes a prestige character. This is just glossing over what I believe to be the most overlooked and most common reasons I've seen prestige fail. I've been wanting to write this for months and those of you who have come to me for advice I've repeated most of this to numerous times...so it will at least make it easier for me to simply link people to this post. And, of course, if anyone else has any suggestions, please feel free to respond.
And of course this doesn't apply to everyone. Some people can, for example, be fairly heavy-handed when it comes to their out of character behavior on the boards...and still get prestige because their writing and IC presence is that amazing.
1.) Writing: Keep your writing top-tier, especially for threads you are highlighting in your application. Even if that means going back and editing your guides for typos or poor syntax.
2.) Personality: You should always be respectful of other players and blahblahbla--but seriously? *Especially* if you know your going to be applying for prestige, now is not the time to start drama. Avoid criticizing others who don't ask for criticism, keep up with your staff work and/or threads to avoid being called lazy in chat and don't disappear completely from the Out Of Character scene. Be present, but a positive presence.
3.) Affect Others and Roleplay with Others: This is an organic roleplaying environment. Get out there and roleplay with others. This also means causing permanent change to our setting and/or other characters. No one is going to remember the guy who gave a flower to that one mortal girl once. People are going to remember the one who made her and her entire clan a pack of hollows and used them to raze seireitei.
4.) Predict or Plan Your Life After Prestige: Include in your app what your going to do now that your prestige and what prestige means for you and your character. Why do you need prestige? If the answer is "because I want to break stat caps", your doing it wrong.
5.) Don't worry about getting bogged down in symbolism and esoteric hoo-ha: Seriously, if your ascension resembles the ending to a Gainax anime, your not necessarily doing it wrong. A lot of prestige ideas are abstracts, especially post-prestige.
6.) And MOST IMPORTANTLY (or most commonly missed): Write your badass moment of prestige ascension AS THOUGH YOU ALREADY ASCENDED. Assume your approved. No. Presume your approved. Do it. Get that awesome power (with the permission of the person your threading with since you can't actually have it mechanically) and show off what a BAMF your prestige character is. The most successful prestige applications stem from CONFIDENCE. And if you don't get approved? Then it was just a temporary power up that foreshadows your inevitable approval as a prestige character.
