So skype has become bloated garbage since microsoft bought it. No news here. But now they are even forcing updates on old versions. Lame.
Are you using the latest version of skype? If your on a PC you might notice its almost impossible to boot. Here's a tip that also improves its stability, but I only know how to temporarily resolve the issue.
Open your task manager (ctrl+alt+del)
Go to processes.
Look up SkypeC2CAutoUpdateSvc.exe and SkypeC2CPNRSvc.exe.
End those processes (hit del with them highlighted or right click and hit 'end process').
Now for a permanent solution? Go to c:\program files (x86)\skype\toolbars\autoupdate\ and move those folders somewhere else. I can't be blamed for damage to your software so there's a chance you'll have to reinstall skype after doing this? But I did it and it worked like a charm.
Note that because of autoupdate I can see the 2nd solution just...not working (or you have to do it over and over every few months). I'm too lazy to redirect the skype's updater to check my local host instead of microsoft to troll it into always thinking it has the latest version and skype does this shit now where if you don't have the latest version you can't log in sooo...there's a chance you won't be able to log into skype a couple months after doing this. In which case you should return those files so you can update (boot skype; update) then get rid of them again.

Also, going into control panel -> internet options -> security -> restricted sites -> sites and adding apps.skype.com/ will block all in-program advertisements from Skype. I've had no ill effects so far.
So many of this is common sense I'm shocked I gotta tell people.
Sounds > Literally Disable Whatever You Want (and stop complaining about bleeps) General Settings > "Show Me Away After X Minutes" if you frequently go away for long periods of time and leave your computer on Notifications > Comes Online/Offline (stop complaining about people have shitting connections and bleeping on and offline spamming your notifications tray)
IM&SMS > IM Appearance > Hey look you can disable those shitty MSN emotes now. And set a default font.
