Basic Information Introduction to Hollow-Breeds On Bleach Gotei we classify both Hollows and Arrancar under a single term: Hollow-Breeds. This is because Arrancar--although in possession of a unique, humanoid form and disparate set of skills compared to those of regular hollows--are a different manifestation of the Hollow form as opposed to their own unique species.
Hollow-Breeds can take on a plethora of physical forms across the various stages of their evolution, but they always possess three universal traits. The first is the “Hollow Hole”, a perfectly circular gap in the Hollow’s body. Hollow Holes represent the heart that they have lost, and the source of their endless hunger. The second is their mask. Hollow masks are bone white constructs that cover the entirety of the beast’s face, and are made from the remains of the heart they have lost. The third trait is hunger. All Hollow-Breeds are ravenous, driven to devour the souls of mortals, Shinigami, and other Hollows. This is a vain attempt to fill the void that they feel where their hearts used to lie, but no matter how much they gorge themselves on souls, the void only grows.
Aspect of Death The Aspect of Death or ‘AoD’ is a psychological phenomenon that occurs within every Hollow-Breed. Put simply, an Aspect of Death is the root cause of the human’s death in life, and it becomes a recurring psychological force that drives their actions as a Hollow-Breed. Although hollow-breeds are almost never aware of their Aspect of Death, it is a constant force in their life, and one they will need to learn to control before it kills them again. Let’s give two examples to highlight how Aspects of death work.
A man who was a compulsive addict and binged on food, drink, and drugs until he died of an overdose would have the aspect ‘Gluttony’, and as a Hollow-Breed they would be particularly driven by his consumption. While this has the obvious connotation of ravenous hunger, their gluttony can express in other ways. It could extend to the other vices such as narcotics, or towards the finer things in life such as wealth and power, and all the excess that they bring.
A man who died trying to kill someone they believed got away with a crime before they killed again would have the aspect of ‘Justice’, and as a Hollow-Breed they would be driven by this strict desire to exact Justice. This could be a litigious form of custom; the Hollow-Breed could believe strictly in the decreed law of Las Noches and insist that anyone who has broken it be tried and sentenced. It could also be a personal form of justice, with the Hollow-breed exacting their own personal punishments on people who have violated their moral code.
Stages of Evolution All Hollow-Breeds first start out as regular humans. When humans die, some will be able to pass on to The Soul Society, while others find themselves stuck on earth. The souls that are stuck come in two forms: Pluses and Demi-Hollows.
A Plus is a ghost that walks the human world. Pluses are simply souls that were unable to move on to The Soul Society at the moment of their death due to their inability to accept their passing. These souls are, for the most part, completely autonomous. They retain their previous memories and intelligence, and can move freely throughout the world--though they are unable to interact with it.
A Demi-Hollow is a plus that is not only unable to accept their death, but is bound to the earth by their suffering and regret. The focus of a Demi-Hollows suffering is always something specific, typically an object, a place, or a person. Whatever their object of focus, the Demi-Hollow will find their Chain of Fate physically connects them to it, forcing them to stay with it at all times. Demi-Hollows that are bound to places are called Jibakurei, while those that are bound to people are called Tsukirei. Both forms of Demi-hollow lose their minds very quickly. Jibakurei become incoherent and animalistic, while Tsukirei become aggressively obsessive, and eventually become hostile towards the objects of their affection/desire.
Both Pluses and Demi-Hollows fall victim to a process known as Encroachment. This is when the chain at the center of their chest--known as the chain of fate--begins to erode away, with the farthest end of the chain growing mouths and beginning to devour itself. This process oscillates between incredibly painful feeding periods where the chain is devouring itself, and docile periods where the chain becomes inert. For Pluses, Encroachment can take anywhere from 72 hours to half a year, depending on the individual soul. For Demi-Hollows, encroachment can easily take years, although more than five is unheard of. However long it takes, when the Chain of Fate fully erodes, the soul it was connected to will break apart and reform into a Hollow.
A Base Hollow is the first evolutionary stage of the Hollow, and it is the form both Pluses and Demi-Hollows take on once their Chains of Fate break. Base Hollows are typically as large as a domestic home, and will often bear some resemblance to the physical shape of an animal. Base Hollows are incredibly dim-witted. They operate purely on instinct, and are driven by one desire: Hunger. They are starving, and will hunt and kill humans in an attempt to satiate their cravings.
As a Base Hollow devours more and more mortals, it slowly regains some of its former intelligence. By the time it is as smart as it was in life, the Hollow will find that regular mortals no longer appetizing. It is now driven by the desire for spiritually powerful souls, such as those of psychics and spiritualists. With each kill the Hollow will grow stronger, until even these souls lose their appeal. It is at this stage that a Base Hollow will develop a new hunger, one for other Hollow-Breeds. These cannibalistic Hollows are inevitably drawn to Hueco Mundo, where they begin to feed on each other en masse, until there are enough in one location to give birth to something new: A Gillian.
A Gillian or ‘Menos Grande’ is the first stage of advanced Hollow-Breeds that are classified as Menos. A Gillian is formed when hundreds of ravenous, cannibalistic Base Hollows gather in the same location and begin to devour each other. This writhing sea of Hollows will merge together into a Gillian. All Gillian are physically identical, appearing as colossal black shapes that stand as much as 8-10 stories tall. They have a Hollow-hole in the center of their chests, spikes protruding from their necks, and a generic white mask. Most Gillian have no overriding will, and as such are incredibly dim-witted.
Sometimes, however, a single Hollow from among the mass that comprises the Gillian will prove itself strong enough to take over, exerting itself as the dominant will upon the body. When this happens its mask will change, and it will begin to devour its kin again in order to evolve. Only this time, it will eat other Gillian, devouring countless souls until finally, it can progress.
An Adjuchas is the next stage of Menos, and are what a Gillian evolves into once it has devoured enough souls. This is also the stage of evolution that a player-character will typically acquire their second Hollow-power. Adjuchas are small, standing barely taller than a human man, and can manifest in both bipedal, vaguely humanoid forms and animalistic forms. Adjuchas are far more intelligent than previous stages of Hollow evolution. They possess above-human levels of intelligence and are universally capable of more ‘complex’ emotions such as empathy and mercy. (This is not to say that these traits cannot manifest earlier, simply that they become universal at this stage of evolution.) Adjuchas are still driven by their eternal hunger, but now there is an added risk to their hunt. If an Adjuchas does not consume enough souls, the dominant Hollow will lose himself in the swarm of spirits in his heart, reverting into a Gillian and destroying its consciousness.
A Vasto Lorde is the final evolutionary stage of the Hollow. It is the third and final classification of Menos, and is a Prestige class. All Vasto Lorde are bipedal, and though they can bear great resemblance to the humans they once were, their Mask, Hollow Holes, and bodies themselves still serve as stark reminders of their bestial nature. It is believed that every Vasto Lordes has consumed at least a million souls. While they still feel hunger and will still eat for pleasure, a Vasto Lorde no longer has the threat of regression to worry about: They can never become an Adjuchas or a Gillian again.
All Menos class Hollow-Breeds are capable of becoming an Arrancar. For this to happen, the Hollow simply needs to have its mask broken, either willingly or in combat, and then possess the spiritual strength required to not be torn apart. If they survive, the Hollow will become a humanoid that looks as they once did in life. They will still sport the Hollow hole, and their face will be covered in a fragment of their shattered mask. Although Gillian class Hollows can become Arrancar, they require a dominant will to do so, and are almost always physically deformed. As such, Arrancar almost exclusively come from Adjuchas and Vasto Lorde stock.
An Arrancar’s former Hollow powers will be sealed away inside a Zanpakutō, and they will have to gradually learn how to call upon this power once again in the form of releases called Resurrección and Resurrección: Segunda Etapa. These are the Arrancar’s second and third powers respectively.
A player making a Hollow can begin at any stage of evolution between Base Hollow and Adjuchas. We do not recommend starting at a higher stage of evolution than a Gillian as a gradual evolution is a core part of the Hollow story. A Hollow that begins as an Adjuchas cannot use that as part of their story until Prestige.
The World of Hueco Mundo Introduction The dimension of Hueco Mundo is a pocket dimension located between The World of The Living and The Soul Society. Given its position between the two realms, Shinigami Scholars have often theorized that Hollow-Breeds being naturally drawn to Hueco Mundo is an expression of their lost souls trying to find their way to salvation. Whether you believe this biased and flowery opinion or not, it is true that Hollow-Breeds find themselves instinctively drawn to this plane, and have made it their home. It’s atmosphere is rich with densely packed Reishi, allowing the very air the Hollow-Breeds breathe while on this plane to sustain them--at least until their hunger grows to the point where they begin cannibalizing their own kind.
Perhaps the most striking feature of Hueco Mundo is its sky. The plane is bathed in eternal night, with it’s sky being a dull grey and black field devoid of stars. A bright crescent moon hangs eternally in the east, and provides what sparse light that strikes the dunes.
The Desert of Hueco Mundo The surface of Hueco Mundo is an endless, lifeless desert. The endless sands are only broken up by the occasional boulder, or a crystal tree that has forced its way up from the forests beneath the dunes. The surface of Hueco Mundo is almost exclusively stalked by Base Hollows that endlessly devour each other as they strive to evolve.
Hidden beneath the sands is The Quartz Forest, also known as The Forest of Menos. The Quartz Forest can only be accessed either by falling down colossal holes that act as entrances, or by blasting your way through the sands. The Quartz Forest is full of colossal growths of quartz that burst forth from its stone floor and burrow their way up through the stone supporting the surface.
Countless Gillian class Hollows populate the Quartz Forest, as they are drawn underground by the smell of the powerful souls that reside there. As most Gillian lack an overriding will, they act as attack dogs for the various Adjuchas-class Hollows that stalk the forest as they desperately try to evolve into Vasto Lordes. This often leads to large scale conflicts between multiple Adjuchas-class Hollows and their Gillian soldiers, resulting in the creation of several more Adjuchas to continue the cycle.
The Castle of Las Noches The Castle of Las Noches is a colossal structure of white stone that looks like an imperial crown. It is the only civilization to be found in all of Hueco Mundo and is so large that by the time you can see it in the distance, you’re still several days travel away, at least by conventional means.
The heart of the castle is a colossal circular dome from the center of which rise three colossal pillars that serve as an observation deck of sorts, allowing a majestic view of the surrounding desert. This central dome is surrounded by six imposing white towers that look like the pearls of a crown. The largest of these towers is known as The King’s Castle, and serves as both the throne room and living quarters for the reigning Monarch. The other five are the Espada Towers, and serve as both the living quarters for the Espada and their Fracción, and the area where Espada can conduct their work with both privacy and autonomy. Espada Towers are often tailored to suit both their assigned duties and their personal preferences on both a cosmetic and recreational level.
The area underneath the dome is known as The Central Castle and is a vast desert littered with small residential towers for the Números. The inside of the dome projects an artificial sky complete with a sun that produces constant daylight to illuminate the desert below. Espada are forbidden from releasing their Zanpakutō under the dome without express permission from the king, as is casting both Gran Ray Cero and Cero Oscuras. The Central Castle is only accessed through a maze-like structure of hallways known as the Tres Cifras. The Tres Cifras is where the Privaron Espada live. They act as gatekeepers, expelling any hostile or unwelcome intruders trying to enter Las Noches.
The Government of Las Noches Since time immemorial, Las Noches has been a Monarchy, with its ruler being dubbed either a King or a Queen depending on their gender. This is not a hereditary monarchy, but one chosen through power; the Monarch is simply whoever is strong enough to claim the throne through force. All of Hueco Mundo is subject to the whims of the Monarch, who has the first and last say in how both Las Noches and Hueco Mundo operates--at least until someone kills them to take their place.
The Espada are the elite of Las Noches, and are the strongest creatures she contains after the Monarch. The Espada are categorized on a numerical system between 1 and 5--Primera, Segunda, Tercera, Cuatro and Quinto respectively, although numbers 6 through 10 have been used when there is an overabundance of worthy Espada--under previous monarchs, these numbers were symbolic of the strength of the Arrancar, the lower the number, the stronger the Espada. However, under the reign of King Erasmus Mei these numbers have become largely irrelevant, with Arrancar being assigned their rank based off the potential he sees in them to benefit his empire rather than any might they possess.
Some Espada take on direct subordinates known as Fracción. Fracción are Hollow-Breeds that serve a specific Espada, although the specifics of this relationship are highly dependant upon the whims of the Espada. Some force Fracción into service and treat them as glorified slaves, while others can maintain positive relationships with them, whether as comrades, pupils, or friends.
Privaron Espada are Espada that have lost their position. Privaron are given a three digit number to categorize them and signify their former position. For example, a Segunda Espada that becomes a Privaron would be given number 102. If another Segunda Espada was demoted while number 102 lived, they would become Privaron 112. While they might not command the authority that they once did, Privaron Espada are still respected as powerful and loyal warriors, and are often the first line of defense for Las Noches. It is often only when the Privaron Espada fail in their duties that the Espada come out to deal with a threat.
Hollow-Breeds that are allied with Las Noches and live within her walls are known as Números. Números are given a number between 11 and 99. While Números are not required to, they often follow the commands of both the Espada and the Fracción, as failure to comply with any orders given will get them killed.
Those associated with Las Noches refer to the unaffiliated Hollow-Breeds as the Innumerable.
History of Hollow-Breeds Origin of Hollow-Breeds For as long as humans have been capable of dying with regrets, Hollows have been born. While some mortals that died were reborn as Hollows in The World of the Living, others found themselves reborn in Hueco Mundo instead. The Reishi-thick air of Hueco Mundo sustained these Base Hollows who had no mortals to eat in order to grow. Without that catalyst, Hueco Mundo grew fat with Hollows that hadn’t yet found hunger for their own kind. Meanwhile, the Hollows on Earth that had gorged themselves on mortals found themselves craving Hollows, and soon found themselves drawn to Hueco Mundo. The result was a feeding frenzy that led to the birth of the first Gillians.
This cycle repeated itself for hundreds of years and the Gillian population overflowed. The docile Gillian were drawn beneath the surface of Hueco Mundo where the Reishi was thicker and their hunger could be satiated. With this boom in the Gillian population there eventually arose Gillian with independent wills that recognize the abundant source of food around them: Fellow Gillians. By devouring their own own kind, they were able to evolve into Adjuchas.
This is how the natural cycle of the Hollows marched on, with Base Hollows that grew ravenous for their own kind coming to Hueco Mundo and in doing so helping birth Gillian, which in turn birthed Adjuchas.
Then came the first Vasto Lorde. With his innate command of the will of Hollows, he bound Adjuchas and Gillian together under his will and named himself King. His vanity drove him to order the construction of his own personal domain: Las Noches.
At first, Las Noches was barely worth noticing. Some Adjuchas slapped together a derelict shack out of the abundant Quartz and they called it his castle. The King was satisfied with this, and while he ordered the occasional expansion to house his loyal supplicants his castle was never more noteworthy than the shack it started as. It was only when another Vasto Lorde rose to challenge the King that things changed. He won the fight, but his mask was shattered in the process. The King was reborn as an Arrancar, and with it, his mind flourished with new possibilities.
War With The Seireitei This Arrancar King set his sights upon The World of the Living. Their food source was right there, waiting for them to come and get it. He would invade Earth and turn it into an abattoir. They would forcefully make more Hollows, which would make more Gillians, Adjuchas, and Vasto Lorde. More Vasto Lordes meant more prey for him, which meant he could become stronger.
The King worked tirelessly and sent his loyal men out to gather as many Adjuchas and Gillian as they could through threat, force, or favor. As his army grew, so too did Las Noches. Shoddy, un-tempered Quartz was abandoned for stone pulled from beneath the sands that was cut and polished with precision. When his army and his castle were complete, the King chose his best ten fighters and named them his Espada.
An army of hundreds of Hollow-Breeds descended upon the Earth, including two Vasto Lordes and over two dozen Adjuchas. What ensued can only be described as a massacre, as hundreds of thousands of mortals were slaughtered in the frenzy.
Then the Shinigami arrived. The Seireitei mobilized every Captain, Lieutenant, and officer they could in response to the Hollow army that had arrived out of nowhere. Weeks of fighting ensued, and in the end both sides were decimated. Over half the Espada died, as did the King himself. The Shinigami suffered equal casualties, with almost all their lieutenants and over half their captains being devoured during the conflict. In the end, the Hollow army was routed, and fled back to Hueco Mundo in disgrace.
With the King dead, it wasn’t long before the surviving Espada turned on each other. One of the Vasto Lorde coveted the throne and the power the previous King had wielded, so he declared that he was now the new King. The other Espada decided that they were just as worthy to rule as him, and attacked the would be King. He died during the conflict, and the other surviving Vasto Lorde took his rightful place as King, only to be murdered less than a year later by one of his Espada. This began a cycle of barbarism that fuels Las Noches to this day. Kings take the crown, build up their castle and their empire, and then are cut down by a stronger man who covets their power.
Las Noches went through hundreds of Monarchs in this way, all the while fighting a bitter war with their new enemy, the Shinigami. Hollow-Breeds found their way to the Seireitei, and soon all the Hollow-Breeds knew of the plane of the Shinigami and their opulent fortress to rival Las Noches herself. Shinigami in turn found their way to Hueco Mundo, and the Shinigami learned of the might of Las Noches. Both factions made incursion attempts against one another, but none were successful.
Until the Seireitei invaded Las Noches.
Modern Day The previous King has been killed, and Las Noches was now governed by a rogue Shinigami named Sōgetsu Voltaire. He was a barbaric monster even by Hollow standards, and treated the Espada and Hollow-Breeds beneath him as little more than playthings. He showed little regard for the well-being of Las Noches as a Kingdom, and made no effort to bolster her numbers or her defenses.
His repugnant behavior eventually drew the ire of the Broken Transcendent Fate, also known as Riko Suzumei. She killed Sōgetsu and devoured him whole, declaring herself Queen. Riko tried to do her best to repair the damage Sōgetsu had cause, but her efforts failed to bear fruit. Whether through fear for her own life or simple disinterest in governing, Riko simply left Las Noches one day never to be seen again.
The Transcendent Truth—who still went by the name of Tova—rose from among the Espada to fill Riko’s shoes. Although he set about trying to repair the damage that had been inflicted by his predecessors, his efforts had come too late to prevent the inevitable.
On the orders of Captain Commander Mitsutaka Karahashi, an army of Shinigami invaded Hueco Mundo and attacked Las Noches herself. The Shinigami managed to catch the Hollow-Breeds off-guard and completely unprepared, and lead by Captain Commander Mitsutaka and Captain Kyousuke Tsukimiya, they engaged in wholesale slaughter of Las Noches’ best fighters. They even decimated the Espada with little effort.
Tova tried to fight against the invaders but was ultimately felled by Broken Transcendent on the side of the Seireitei: Time, known more widely as Hikari Miyazaki. She was, for the danger she posed, later executed by Kyousuke Tsukimiya.
Mitsutaka had the defeated King dragged back to the Seireitei in secret, while Kyousuke stayed behind to act as Occupation Commander over the now-enslaved Las Noches.
Mere days after having been captured and dragged off to the Seireitei, Tova mysteriously reappeared in Las Noches and met with Kyousuke. He struck a deal with the Occupation Commander, and was set up as a figurehead King loyal to the Shinigami. Together they subjugated Hollow-Breeds and the Shinigami occupiers, Tova, and the native population set about repairing the damage that had been inflicted to the castle during the invasion, with the intention to establish it as an outpost for the Shinigami to monitor and control the Hollow-Breed population.
As soon as the repairs were complete, however, Tova turned on Kyousuke. The two fought on the dome of Las Noches, and Kyousuke was forced to flee using his Zanpakutō’s power. Tova assumed he had killed the Occupation Commander and turned his focus on the Seireitei itself.
Tova traveled to The Soul Society and rampaged his way through the Rukongai and into the Seireitei itself in an event that would come to be called ‘The Great Seireitei Massacre.’ Every Shinigami that stood in his way he either slaughtered, beat near death, or infected with an Inner Hollow, until finally he encountered Captain Commander Mitsutaka himself. The two fought and Tova struck a lethal blow on Mitsutaka. Instead of dying, however, Mitsutaka transcended and became Wishes.
Faced with Wishes, Tova chose to make a tactical retreat and returned to Las Noches. When he arrived home he personally devoured every Shinigami that remained in the garrison. He declared Las Noches independent again and took his position as its rightful King. The Seireitei was too focused on rebuilding themselves after their crippling defeat and Tova was able to reconstruct his Kingdom and his Espada in peace.
Nearly a year after the Massacre, Tova called a meeting of his Espada. This meeting was interrupted by… Truth. Truth told the Espada that the Tova that was serving as King (who will be referred to as “aTova” going forward) was an imposter that took over while Truth was held prisoner in the Seireitei. Given aTova’s numerous successes both in breaking the Seireitei and liberating Las Noches, the assembled Espada were indifferent to this revelation, and attacked Truth. Truth easily defeated every Espada who tried to attack him and decided to leave Las Noches.
With Truth gone, aTova was able to focus on what interested him the most: Experimenting on mortals. He went to Karakura Town with several of his loyal Arrancar in order to harvest interesting Mortal Spiritualists to experiment on. This event would later be dubbed ‘the Incursion.’ Captain Commander Kenshou Ine gave the order for a response unit to be mobilized, including the Kidō Corps. Captain Miki Sakamoto of the Fourth Division defied this order and instead chose to betray the Shinigami. She slaughtered the Kidō Corps and then went to Earth with the intention to destroy Karakura Town.
Although both Nothing and Hatred tried to stop Miki—along with the assistance of a Mortal Spiritualist named Adimus—they were too late. Miki managed to destroy Karakura Town and escape to Las Noches, and the distraction she caused allowed aTova to harvest the mortal specimens he was after without interruption. He took those he captured back to Las Noches and set about experimenting upon them.
Given the chaos aTova had wrought, Truth and Wishes decided they had to step in. The pair traveled to Las Noches, and a bloody battle ensued on the surface of the Las Noches dome. Although aTova devoured over half the souls in Las Noches with his Gonzui, his strength was still not enough to stand up to the two Transcendents, who managed to kill the King.
The sight of aTova dying was too much for his Primera Espada, Amaya Kidachi. She was in love with him and seeing him die caused her to become the Broken Transcendent known as Severance. Her breaking caused Severance to decide that the only way she could cope with losing people was to cut them out of her life completely by killing them. To this end, she set about trying to force Truth to come back so she could kill him. She tried destroying monuments on Earth like The Statue of Liberty, attacking Shinigami, and even turning Kiriko Chinda into the Broken Transcendent Penance. When none of these attempts worked, she decided to attack the connection between the worlds itself.
Severance sent Takua Megiddo—her Primera and the only one capable of stopping her—to The Seireitei under orders to kill Captain Ezekiel of the Fourth Division. When Takua had arrived in the Seireitei, Severance used her powers to sever the connection between the planes, making travel between The World of the Living, Hueco Mundo, and the Soul Society impossible, thereby destroying the ability for the Cycle of Rebirth to continue. This forced Truth to come and repair the damage Severance caused. When he confronted Severance, the two fought and Truth severely injured her. Takua Megiddo interrupted their fight, having just escaped The Soul Society. After Truth told him what she did, Takua killed Severance.
The throne was left vacant until Takua told Erasmus Mei—an Arrancar who had served as both Primera and Segunda Espada under Severance—that both Severance and his lover Rania Odette were dead. The revelation caused Erasmus to become the Broken Transcendent known as Obsession. Obsession immediately declared himself King of Las Noches and set about reforming the way their power structure worked. He had little interest in the power games the Espada played and instead made them reflective of the division structure employed by the Seireitei. Each Espada position now had specific duties, such as Medicine, Science, and Combat Training.
Obsession ordered his Segunda Espada, Evelynn Avana, to begin to infect as many Shinigami as she could with an Inner Hollow, while he set out to personally convert the Quincy to his cause. Obsession met with Weylin von Wolfenstein and used his powers to warp the King’s mind and make him sympathetic towards allying to fight against The Shinigami. Takua Megiddo, now Primera under Obsession, found out about this and did his best to undo the damage Obsession had done to Weylin’s mind. Takua confronted the King over his actions and the two came to blows. They engaged in a harrowing fight that destroyed both The King’s Castle and the Dome of Las Noches, but neither of them were strong enough to kill one another. Takua retreated, and Obsession set about repairing the damage the former Primera had dealt to his castle.
Obsession reigns as King of Las Noches to this day, and his castle is still being repaired after the devastating blow Takua dealt to it.
Hollow Evolution Hollow Evolution is the skill that represents a Hollow-Breed's progress along the evolutionary chain, and grants several skills inherent to being a Hollow breed in addition to determining the individual's skill with these abilities. While all Hollow-Breeds have Hollow Evolution, it functions somewhat differently for Hollows and Arrancar. For Hollows this is their power skill, and governs their efficacy with both their first and second powers. For Arrancar, this skill only governs their initial Hollow power. Both Resurrección and Resurrección: Segunda Etapa are governed by an Arrancar-exclusive skill known as Hollow Resonance.
All Hollow-Breeds with beginner rank in this skill can use Komon. Komon allows a Hollow-Breed to travel between Earth and Hueco Mundo by forcing their way through the void that separates the two planes. This process is slow and painful, requiring the user to literally force their way through. Because of this inconvenience, most Hollow-Breeds prefer to travel via a Garganta. A Garganta is a rapidly created, stable entrance into the void between worlds, and they can be used to travel safely to and from Earth, Hueco Mundo, Las Noches, and the Dangai Precipice World. The technique for opening a Garganta is technically called Descorrer, although most simply refer to this form of travel by Garganta instead. Hollow-Breeds learn how to use Descorrer at Novice rank.
At Journeyman rank, Hollows gain an ability called Acidic Touch that lets them make their skin caustic to non-Hollow entities. This allows them to leave burns on those that they come into contact with. These burns aren’t severe unless contact is prolonged for enough time, but simply allow the Hollow to inflict pain with even the mildest of touches. This is a passive effect for Hollow-Breeds, albeit one that they can temporarily suppress. For Arrancar this is an active effect they have to intentionally activate.
At least Journeyman rank in this skill is required for a Hollow to evolve into Adjuchas.
Advancement in Hollow Evolution requires the user to not only gain an understanding of their natural abilities and their Hollow powers, but of what it means to be a Hollow. Masters in Hollow Evolution understand how their faults and sins have made them into the monster that they are. By consuming and further feeding those hungers, and mastering the ever-growing pile of souls deep within them, they gain further command over their powers.
Hollow Resonance Hollows Resonance is an exclusive skill to the Arrancar, and is discovered as part of achieving Resurrección. It is a power skill, and governs the Arrancar’s proficiency with both Resurrección and Resurrección: Segunda Etapa. Resurrección and Resurrección: Segunda Etapa are the Arrancar’s second and third powers respectively, and as such they each grant 40 points of bonus Reiatsu while released.
At Beginner rank, the Arrancar will find both releasing and maintaining their Resurrección difficult. They will find that they quickly burn through their Reiryoku as they struggle to properly tap into and utilize their new release.
By Journeyman rank, the Arrancar can both release and maintain their Resurrección for long periods of time with ease, and by Expert rank they can do so indefinitely. At least Journeyman rank in Hollow Resonance is required for an Arrancar to acquire Resurrección: Segunda Etapa.
Resurrección: Segunda Etapa is far harder to use than Resurrección, and even an expert ranked user will struggle to maintain it for long periods of time. While a master can use this release comfortably for long durations, only a Grandmaster is capable of indefinitely maintaining their Segunda Etapa. At Grandmaster rank, the power of the release also expands, increasing the release reiatsu bonus for both Resurrección and Resurrección: Segunda Etapa by +10, from 40 to 50 each.
Advancement in Hollow Resonance requires the Arrancar to examine the life they have lead as both a flawed person, and as a monster; to gain an understanding over this dichotomy and to grow from it. While there are countless ways to accomplish this, some Arrancar may choose to examine the sins and faults of their past life, ultimately gaining some understanding of their Aspect of Death. Others still may look at the monster they used to see and reject the terrible things they did, instead hoping suppress that base Hollow within them.
It is worth noting that, unlike with the Zanpakutō of a Shinigami, an Arrancar’s Zanpakutō is simply their sealed Hollow powers, and does not come with an internal voice or personification.
Cero/Bala Cero and Bala are two closely related schools of destructive magic that all Hollow-Breeds have the instinctive capability to perform without training. Unlike the Kidō of the Shinigami or the Kirchenlied of the Quincy, Hollow-Breeds are not capable of utility orientated spellcasting and can only use this skill to produce destructive, combat-oriented effects. When you take this skill you must choose either Cero or Bala to be your Primary skill. The other will become your secondary skill, and will function as one rank lower for no extra GP expenditure. Regardless of whether the user is specialized in Cero or Bala, at Grandmaster rank they have mastered this skill to such an extent that they can now use both Cero and Bala at the same rank.
Cero is a school of destructive casting where the caster coalesces their Reiryoku externally. At first, the Reiryoku compresses into a small sphere. Once charged, this sphere then explodes out violently, firing a colossal wave of raw energy that destroys everything in its way. Cero can be charged from almost any point in the body. While the palms of the hands and the inside of the mouth are the most common locations that Cero are fired from, they can be produced anywhere in the body the user is able to send their Reiryoku. Some Hollow-Breeds have been known to fire them from their Hollow holes, their feet, and even their eyes.
At Beginner rank, the caster must spend a large amount of time charging a cero before firing. The produced Cero is generally either thin, or doesn’t travel far before the Reiryoku thins out to harmless densities. Even when it does hit, the Cero is more likely to simply burn the target than it is to destroy them.
At Novice rank, the destructive potential of the caster’s Cero increases significantly. They charge faster, travel farther, and their size can be adjusted to be either thin but travel longer or thick but with a shorter range depending on the caster’s needs.
At Journeyman rank, the caster can now produce a Cero that is fired without charging in an emergency. This Cero is highly unstable, and lacks both the destructive force and range of its concentrated siblings. It will rarely travel farther than twenty feet before dissipating entirely.
At Expert rank, the caster is now capable of casting Gran Rey Cero, a technique made famous by the Espada of Las Noches. The caster’s own blood is mixed directly into the Cero as it charges--this is typically done via cutting open their hand, but any open wound will do to supply the blood--this creates a Cero that flies faster and hits harder than its regular counterpart. The Grand Rey Cero is said to bend space around itself as it tears through the air, and will often simply rip through targets and keep going rather than exploding on impact.
At Master rank, the caster is now capable of producing the infamous Cero Oscuras. This Cero is fired in a thin laser like beam, and explodes on impact, creating both a colossal blast and a devastating shock wave. From here, there are no more “conventional Cero” for a caster to learn. Instead, the caster must instead rely on their own talents to come up with new and unique variations, such as a Cero that specializes in shattering barriers.
Bala is a school of destructive magic where the caster rapidly hardens and then expels their Reiryoku in the form of a small sphere. A bala operates on concussive force, and hits far more like a punch than its destructive sister, Cero. Unlike Cero, Bala are not as easy to fire from any part of the body. They operate best when being literally punched out of the user’s hands, and while they can theoretically be formed anywhere on the body, they form and fly the fastest when coming from the hands. The Bala makes up for its reduced destructive force and the limited variety of locations it can be generated from with its speed. Those experienced in producing Bala can make them travel up to twenty times the speed of a Cero.
At Beginner rank, the caster is unable to produce Bala rapidly. Instead, they have to spend several seconds charging the energy around their hand as though it were a Cero before firing it. The produced Bala, while fast, is relatively unstable and will deteriorate as it travels, gradually becoming weaker before ultimately dissipating entirely.
At Novice rank, the caster can now produce unstable but potent Bala rapidly, or spend a short period of time charging a Bala to make it perfectly stable and capable of traveling long distances without losing its power or speed.
At Journeyman rank, the caster can now rapidly fire stable Bala with ease, and only needs to charge them when they want to increase their destructive force even further. The adept can now use Bala Sónico, a technique where they charge energy in their hand and then punch out, firing a rapid barrage of Bala at once. These Bala don’t travel as far, but each Bala travels faster than its regular equivalent.
At Expert rank, the caster can fire up to three Bala in a single punch, as well as firing Bala without any movement whatsoever. They also no longer need to spend time charging Bala Sónico. The expert can now use Gran Rey Bala, a variation based off of the Gran Rey Cero. A Gran Ray Bala is a Bala that is charged before being firing, and is mixed with its users blood. These Bala travel so fast that they break the sound barrier, and can travel for miles without stopping.
At Master rank, the caster can produce a barrage of bala with a single flick of their wrist, and can produce a swarm of bala from dozens of different points in their body at once, sending them flying in every direction simultaneously. From here, there are no more “conventional Bala” for a caster to learn. Instead, the caster must instead rely on their own talents to come up with new and unique variations, such as a Bala that explodes, or one that specializes in piercing straight through Hierro with its concussive force.
Hierro Literally meaning “Steel Skin”, Hierro is one of the two skills that Hollow-Breeds rely on for survival--the other being Regeneration. Hierro earned its name from how it reacts when a blade strikes its reinforced skin. Instead of piercing, the steel simply harmlessly drags across the surface, sending a stream of sparks and letting off the high pitched whine of steel grinding on steel. Hierro is a passive skill that reinforces the practitioner’s skin, making it capable of reducing or outright stopping blows that would otherwise kill them. A Hollow Breed that chooses to Master Hierro will not be able to also Master Regeneration, although they may still raise it to Expert.
At Beginner rank, the durability of the user’s skin has only increased slightly, and only at very specific vital points, namely the neck. The defense it conveys is almost irrelevant, only serving to impair or reduce attacks that would have struggled to hurt the user in the first place.
By Journeyman rank, the user’s entire body falls under the protection of their Hierro, although vital areas like the torso and the neck are more heavily reinforced than extremities like the ankles or the feet. The Hierro can now outright stop weaker attacks, and will help to reduce the damage of all but the most overwhelming strikes.
At Expert rank, even the user’s extremities are as heavily reinforced as their vital organs, and the protection of Hierro spreads to the muscle-fibre and bone beneath the skin, helping further dampen the damage dealt by attacks capable of piercing the skin.
At Master rank, the user’s Hierro can block attacks that would once have killed them without so much as a scratch, allowing them to use their skin to actively block attacks in combat without trepidation and walk straight through hazards that would have once destroyed them without a second thought.
Regeneration Regeneration is one of the two techniques that Hollow-Breeds rely on for survival--the other being Hierro. Hollows, like Shinigami, are souls. As such, their existence is not quite as tied down in the specifics and laws that govern mortals. Instead, their bodies are largely metaphorical, and their wounds are similar. Regeneration allows the user to mend wounds that they have sustained through will alone, rejecting even fatal injuries as they force their soul to return to how it should be. A Hollow Breed that chooses to Mastery Regeneration, will not be able to Master Hierro, although they may still raise it to Expert.
At Beginner rank, the user will only notice a small but not unwelcome increase in their natural healing. Small cuts and scrapes that would normally take days to heal will now heal in minutes, and grievous wounds will heal slightly faster--but only enough to reduce the recovery from a year to say, eight months. Even this small amount of healing requires active, focused concentration from the user to achieve.
At Novice rank, the user’s regenerative speed begins to increase, allowing them to heal smaller wounds faster, and begin to make a noticeable, yet still not fast, dent in larger injuries.
By Journeyman rank, the user’s power over regeneration has increased to the point where it can be classified as High-Speed Regeneration. Small cuts and burns disappear as quickly as they are formed, and now the user can rely on some semblance of automation. While the larger wounds require them to focus in, to actively try and heal them, smaller wounds simply disappear without the user so much as noticing they were there. The user can now heal compound fractures and broken bones--though these require concentration and will often need to be set first-- and even small appendages such as a severed hand or foot.
At Expert rank, the user can now regenerate large scale slashes and cuts quickly and efficiently, even without active concentration. They can now also regrow severed limbs with a great deal of concentration and effort--although until Master rank this will take some time to do.
By Master rank, the user truly understands and accepts that their body is conceptual, and has all but entirely detached themselves from the notion that they are bound to their physical body, its forms, and its injuries. With this understanding comes a breakthrough in Regeneration known as Critical Regeneration. This technique allows the user to heal wounds they would have previously been unable to--namely damage to the internal organs. However, Critical Regeneration is not a passive form of Regeneration, and requires active effort and concentration from the user. If they lose focus, or the will to correct themselves, their regenerative attempt will fail and they will perish from their wounds.
Even a master cannot heal some things, however. While partial brain damage can be repaired, complete destruction cannot. Similarly, while a stab wound to the heart could be regenerated, if multiple vital organs like the heart and lungs were destroyed at once, that would be too difficult for the user to mend. Just because the physical form of the soul is largely conceptual does not mean that it cannot be destroyed outright, and no will is strong enough to reject obliteration.
Prestige Vasto Lorde The Vasto Lorde is the pinnacle of Hollow Evolution. A Vasto Lorde is comprised of millions of souls, all broken in the face of a single overriding will. The soul in command of a Vasto Lorde has achieved perfect domination of the souls that comprise itself, and can never regress to an earlier Hollow form.
Vasto Lordes are all bipedal humanoid creatures, although their features are often still highly inhuman. They still possess their Mask and Hollow Hole, as well as specific traits endemic to their previous form. For example, although a Vasto Lorde that used to look like a dragon must be a bipedal humanoid, it can still retain its tail and wings.
All Vasto Lordes are highly intelligent beings, capable of advanced rationality and of experiencing every emotion a human or Shinigami could feel. Their domination over the souls that comprise them has liberated them from their hunger, turning it from a dominating force to something they can easily manage and outright ignore. Vasto Lordes can even pull on the souls that comprise other Hollow, stirring up their hunger and bending it to their will in order to force them to do the Vasto Lorde’s bidding.
Prestige Arrancar Arrancar are inherently complicated creatures. They are both Hollows, creatures driven by pure instinct to devour and kill, and Shinigami, ‘pure beings’ that have retained their rationality and their humanity. They have hunger, but they don’t have to let it control them. They possess an Aspect of Death, but contain the intelligence and the will to learn not to fall prey to it.
There are countless quandaries for an Arrancar to face, and it is when they both understand and accept who and what they are that their soul can expand. With this expansion comes Resurrección: Segunda Etapa, the Arrancar’s third power. This release allows the Arrancar to completely assume their former Hollow-form, adopting the exact appearance they would have possessed as a Vasto Lorde.
Skills In addition to the basic Hollow-Breed skillset, Prestige Hollow-Breeds gain the following:
Apex Predator (Vasto Lorde only)
Gonzui or Hierro or Regeneration
Custom Skill Slot
Apex Predator Apex Predator is a Vasto Lorde (Hollow) exclusive skill, and functions as the Power Skill for the third Hollow power granted with prestige.
While the first and second Hollow powers were passive abilities that were constantly at the Hollow's disposal, the third Hollow power is far more difficult to wield due to its intense power. While they are utilizing their new power, a Vasto Lorde enjoys a +40 Reiatsu bonus.
It requires vast amounts of Reiryoku to simply have at the ready, let alone utilize. Newly evolved Vasto Lordes will have an exceptionally difficult time with this ability, and will be unable to easily use it until Journeyman rank. It will take until Expert rank for the user to be able to constantly draw upon it like their other Hollow powers.
This skill also allows the Vasto Lorde to command lesser Hollows--Although this doesn’t affect Arrancar. When the Vasto Lorde gives commands to lesser Hollows, they will feel an immense desire to obey. This desire, this need to listen is so overwhelming that it rivals even the very hunger of the Hollow-Breed, and will often persist long after the Vasto Lorde has left as it compels them to serve, to follow their instructions. This control that the Vasto Lorde can exert is simply them expanding their control over souls outwards. Just as they have completely dominated of the millions of souls that now comprise their form, so too can they begin to dominate the souls that comprise other Hollow-Breeds. Player Characters are no way required to adhere to this part of the skill, and can simply resist the desire. That said, sometimes giving in can be equally interesting to the story, if not more so.
Advancement in Apex Predator requires the user to understand the nature of their new powers, how they function, and how they have changed the Vasto Lorde for having wielded them. Vasto Lordes seeking to master this skill will often explore the way their new powers have changed them, their dominance over the conglomeration of souls that comprises them, and their ability to influence this sway on others.
Gonzui Gonzui is a form of rapid consumption utilized by only the most dominant of Hollow-Breeds. It allows the user to suck in nearby fragile souls and consume them for additional energy. For Hollows, this will incorporate the soul into the mass that comprises them just as it would if they had devoured it, while Arrancars will simply break the soul apart into energy. Because of this, Gonzui grants slightly more energy recovery to an Arrancar user than it does a Hollow, but both practitioners regain energy from its application.
The strength of the souls consumed depends entirely on the talent of the practitioner. At Beginner rank, the user will only be able to devour souls that are spiritually unaware or overwhelmingly fragile, such as mortals, pluses in the Rukongai, or freshly formed Hollow-Breeds that have yet to begin to devour souls.
As the user’s skill increases, so too does the range they affect, the energy they gain, and the strength of the soul they can devour. An Expert can cover a range of several miles, and suck in base Hollows, weak spiritually aware mortals, and even average Shinigami. A master in this skill takes their domination of souls to a new level entirely. They are capable of covering an area larger than Las Noches herself, and can suck in above-average Shinigami, powerful spiritualists, and even Gillian.
Player Characters can always resist being consumed by Gonzui, unless, of course, they want to be.
